A HISTÓRIA DA MINHA VIDA

Todo o povo tem as suas narrativas
R. Barthes

Então enchi-me de coragem e sem pensar em nada, despi-me, atirei-me à água e fui salvar o meu pião.

My Spinning Top

I recall a time in my childhood in which my only wish was to have a spinning top. I could only have it if I saved some money. That’s what I did. I got the necessary amount and bought my toy. A dream came true!
One day my friends and I went to the docks, next to the lifeguard’s house, to toss our spinning tops. There we were protected from the cold February weather.
Everything was OK until I started playing. I’ll never forget what happened then. I aimed at my friend’s spinning top, but I failed and my toy fell into the water. I couldn’t believe my eyes! My dream toy was floating away. It had been so hard to get it. I couldn’t lose it. I was completely devastated!
Suddenly I summoned up the courage and, without even thinking, I took off my clothes and jumped into the water. The water was so freezing that I could have died of hypothermia. Fortunately I was able to react and swam towards the stairs and when I reached the top I proudly said: “Here is my spinning top!”
While I was getting dressed, the lifeboat skipper angrily told me that I had put my life in danger. But I replied: “Skipper César - so we called him - I sure could have died, but I saved my spinning top!”

No podía perderlo. ¡Me sentía totalmente desolado!

Ich werde niemals vergessen, was danach geschah.

Našetril som si potrebnú sumu a kúpil som si svoju obľúbenú hračku.
To bolo ťažké prijať. Nesmel som dopustiť takú stratu. Bol som úplne zničený!
Zrazu som nabral odvahu a bez rozmyslu som si vyzliekol šaty a skočil som do vody.

Perguntou.
Não me diga.

THE SINGING BLACKBIRD
.
This happened on a hot summer morning. I was having a coffee at Paval´s Bar, in Valença, when Simão arrived. We greeted each other.
Simão was good-humoured that day, so I came straight to the point which had taken me there. I wanted a blackbird and I asked him if he could get me one. He answered promptly: `Of course! Let’s do it right now!`
We went to Jofre´s house, which is in Fontoura, in order to get it. When we arrived there, Simão asked Jofre if he could offer me a blackbird. Jofre took a nice bird out of the cage and said: `Here it is! Take it with you! I just ask you to treat it well!` I replied `Of course, I will! I have a cage ready with every required accessory, including a net tube towards the glass balcony, so that the bird can flutter and feel free.
The blackbird really liked the spot and felt comfortable in that new atmosphere. The bird showed its contentment singing from dawn to sunset. It was really nice hearing it sing!
The blackbird cage used to be cleaned at least twice a week. While the cleaning process occurred, the bird had to be kept inside the net tube so that it couldn’t fly away. On a Wednesday evening, the telephone rang while I was cleaning the cage. There was no one else at home, so I answered it. I don’t remember quite well what happened that day, but the fact is that I completely forgot the bird and how it had been left.
On Saturday, after having lunch, I got everything ready to watch the England World Cup Final Tournament on TV, but…all of a sudden I had a bad feeling… There was too much silence, something was wrong… I ran towards the glass balcony and then I realised the consequences of my absent-mindedness. I looked at the cage and the net tube and I saw the blackbird lying dead. No doubt that it had died of hunger and thirst. I felt a great sorrow and pain inside! I picked it up, it was already stiff as a board, wrapped it in a newspaper and threw it into the rubbish bin. When my wife arrived home, she saw the dead blackbird in the dustbin and asked me desolately: `How did it happen? ` I didn’t even answer. There was nothing we could do to solve the situation. Meanwhile, the football match had already started….
Some time later, we went to my brother-in-law’s house for lunch. He lives in Moledo. While we were having lunch that day, I heard my wife saying to Maria do Céu, a sister-in-law of mine: Do you know something? I’ve been really sad!´ ´Why?´, she asked me. `Some days ago I sprayed the plants with an insect-repellent and I ended up killing the blackbird!´ `Oh, really? It sang so beautifully!...”´, answered Maria do Céu. ´Yes, it did! … Octávio can’t even imagine that it was me who killed it in such a negligent way! ´I hope he can get another one and things will be normal again! I didn’t want my wife to hold the burden of guilt for something she hadn’t done. I approached them and interrupted their talk by telling that I was the one to be blamed for the blackbird’s death. Then, I explained the way it all had happened.
My wife is really stubborn, so she didn’t want to believe my story, insisting that it was the insect killer that had made the poor bird die. Therefore, she assumed all the responsibility for that.
Very patiently, I explained to her what had happened over and over again. She didn’t seem convinced, but she eventually accepted my version of the bird’s death. She made me feel relieved for acknowledging the true fact.
As time passed by, whenever this episode came to my mind, I always thought that this story with two main characters claiming responsibility for the death of the same animal might be a good storyline for a Sherlock Holmes’s film.

MY TIMES AT SCHOOL
.
I have always been a normal child. At first, I felt happy to attend primary school, because I was anxious about learning to read and write, but soon I became fearful when I met my bad-tempered, grouchy teacher.
As time went by, my teacher realised suddenly that I wrote with my left hand. He asked me to go to the blackboard and that’s when the trauma started. He tied my left hand with a rope and forced me to write with my right hand. This situation went on for days, maybe for several weeks and every time I had to go to the blackboard, I had to show excellent handwriting, otherwise the teacher would slap my face or hit me with a wooden ruler.
That year was actually a complete trauma!
I didn’t pass that school year! Fortunately, the following year I had another teacher and then I could write the way I felt like. I finished 4th grade. I continued my studies and finished elementary school. Then I attended an industrial course in locksmithing and automotive mechanics, which I have not yet completed.
Those were hard times, indeed!

A FRIENDLY CAT
.
One day I arrived home at two o’clock in the afternoon. My mother had left some food on a dish and as it was already late, It was cold. The meal consisted of cod with boiled potatoes. I got annoyed with the situation and told my mum I wouldn’t eat lunch. My mother didn’t care and went out.
I waited till she went out and eventually decided to sit down again to have lunch. When I returned to the table, I saw that the food had vanished, all the cod had gone. It was the cat! My cat, which I truly cared about, a beautiful big tabby animal, had behaved badly.
Although we had a close relationship, at that moment I felt so much rage that I took the broom and hit the cat four times. The cat didn’t like it, so it turned round and fought back, throwing itself at me. I had never seen such an enraged cat! It is said that cats have seven lives, that one had countless lives. I was really distressed!
I opened the kitchen door and the cat ran out towards the corridor shattering the door window into pieces. That was another expense I had to pay by myself on that fatidic day.
No one could believe what had happened, but as the cat didn’t show up again, they started accepting the situation.
The cat had been away for more than a week. When it returned, it kept looking at me apprehensively, growling at me and then simply running off.
The cat has never forgiven me for my sulky, teenage attitude! I lost a friend, indeed!

UNFORGETTABLE FRIENDS
.
Strange as it may seem, I’ll never forget this period of my life because moments like this one only happen once in a lifetime.
While I was doing my military service and after qualifying in my speciality, I was sent to Vendas Novas` barracks. There I developed the most genuine friendship ever. We were just four soldiers, newly arrived and I felt I needed to meet new people, so I began getting to know them.
That’s how things got started. My true mate was Joaquim Gomes, another soldier from the suburbs of Viseu.
We became good friends to the point of sharing everything we had.
Fortunately (for him), Joaquim had a sister living near our barracks. On the other hand, I could only see my own family every three months. At the weekend my friend would be worried and sad for leaving me all alone at the barracks. Little by little he tried to convince me to stay at his sister´s at the weekend, but being a complete stranger to her, I felt a little uneasy and found it hard to accept his invitation. Eventually though I did. Joaquim tried his best to make me feel comfortable amongst his friendly and welcoming family.
As time went by, our bond became stronger and stronger till the day we left. All in all we spent three years of our lives together. We felt great going back home! The Just before leaving we were very excited and anxious because we were about to be free again. I have never seen Joaquim again. He managed to pack his things before me, so we only met later at the parade ground. We gave each other a hug and promised to see each other again. We haven’t been in touch since. He told me that he would move to Setúbal and as soon as he had settled down, he would send me his new address. I haven’t given up the hope of seeing him again. That was the nicest friendship I have ever had.

MY VILLAGE TRADITIONS, CUSTOMS AND FEAST DAYS
.
The emblematic feast of our patron saint `St. Laurence` was part of my village’s popular traditions. On this day, people get together with those from nearby villages. This feast is supposed to be celebrated by everyone!
This festivity start early in the morning with a marching band and religious ceremonies. We used to wear fancy new clothes on that special occasion. A procession starts from the churchyard, bearing the patron´s image, angels and other holy pictures. Everybody participates in this holy procession.
After the religious ceremonies had come to an end, we used to listen to folk music. We would gather around the bandstand and dance, listening to typical `cantares ao desafio` ( when two folk singers take turns to make up a rhyme scheme and challenge each other, mostly using promiscuous verses). This lively atmosphere continued all day long. Single boys and girls met each other and flirted. At the end of the day we used to go back home and have a good dinner, which, among other things consisted of, wood oven roasted kid with potatoes and salad. We drank homemade red or white wine and water. For dessert, we used to have leite-creme, vermicelli and filhoses (similar to pancakes). After dinner, we would go back to the festival to enjoy ourselves and watch the fireworks. The feast usually went on till late at night. That’s the way it used to be.
Then, another week passed by. In my village, we used to spend our Sunday afternoons at the churchyard; that was the youngsters´ meeting point. Some boys from nearby villages would come along, too. Some would play the concertina and we would dance till it got dark. As a way of showing our gratitude to the concertina players for their performance, we gathered some money and gave it to them. We, the girls, were very happy because we had a lot of fun on those afternoons.
This is how the traditional feast of St. Laurence and our Sunday afternoons used to be in my village called Marinhas, in Esposende.

Unforgettable moments of my life
.
When I was eighteen years old, in 1965, I experienced some wonderful and unforgettable moments.
At that time, there was the Portuguese Youth Movement. This association was responsible for national and international work contests. At that time, as I was working as a welder at Viana do Castelo´s Naval Dockyard, I was chosen to represent my company at a Lisbon’s National Contest of Work. Having been awarded the first place, I was selected to represent my country in the International Contest of Work which would take place in Scotland. I reached an outstanding position, namely, third place. Therefore, I was awarded a bronze medal, which was a prestigious experience for both myself and for the reputation of my company. That episode has definitely touched my life very deeply. I felt really happy and proud of what I had achieved. I will never forget this experience as long as I live.
I must confess that the company in which I have worked for 40 years has rewarded me in financial terms, having raised my salary. That was true evidence of the good service I gave. That was like a dream come true. As time went by, this episode became overlooked. For years there has been considerable rearrangement and a great change in the company’s main business interests. The role that I had once played has just been forgotten. During the last years I’ve worked there, my performance has been neglected. Well… that’s life!
Nevertheless, I always did my utmost on behalf of the company until the very moment I left, because it was there that I matured into real man!

VIAGENS

"Please! Please!" Eu olhei e perguntei! "Can y elp you?" - "Yes", disse a mulher de feições asiáticas – "Takes, this portable bag is yours!" quando vi a minha bolsa disse! "Ah! Olha é a minha bolsa!"

A journey episode
.
On the way back from a journey to the Caribbean, I disembarked in Miami, Florida. While I was at the airport, I went to a snack-bar to have something to eat and drink. I put my hand bag on the counter which contained my salary from the last seven months. I wasn’t used to laying my bag anywhere but it really happened that day. I put it down and simply forgot to pick it up again. I paid the bill with the money I had in my wallet. While I was moving towards the departure gate, I heard someone cry out `Please, please!`, with her arm raised and holding my bag. I looked at her and asked, ´Can I help you?` `Yes`, replied the Asian-looking woman. ´Take it, this hand bag is yours!´ When I saw my bag, I said `Oh, that’s my bag!´ I was stunned and speechless. I picked up my bag and when I said `thanks a lot`, the Asian woman had already disappeared.
That bag had all of my savings, all the money I had earned for seven months of work onboard . It was a large amount of money!
When I got into the plane, I had already forgotten this incident. I had my mind set on Portugal.

THE BUTCHERING OF THE PIG

By November, we had started thinking about slaughtering the pig, which had been reared for the purpose of feeding the family throughout the year.
The hectic atmosphere started very early in the morning. At half past six all the family members had already woken up and were prepared for the big event. They had everything ready for the butcher (slaying is very violent, usually reserved for murder, personally I wouldn’t use it for a butcher who was just doing his job) . Mr. António, nicknamed Mascôto, was about to come up!
My father didn’t like to watch the pig being slaughtered. However, he had to help the other men to seize the pig. The animal weighed more than 150 kg (about 300 pounds) and it resisted strongly till the moment it was immobilised. It took seven strong men to get hold of it. We usually asked our neighbours to help.
After the slaughter, the butcher boasted, ´It got it straight in the heart! And it bled nicely!’ Meanwhile, my mother who was stirring the blood so not to coagulate said, ´Come on! Bring the mug and serve these people with wine and dried figs, before they start singeing the pig!` They used bunches of rye straw which were lit first and then they fanned the pig with them to scorch the skin. They had to do this as many times as possible for the skin to shine. After this, they washed the pig with warm water and soap, rubbing its skin with a flat stone.
After the out-door procedures, they took the pig into the house to be hung. Firstly, they removed its guts, which were still warm and then these were emptied and cleaned. The guts were later taken to a sweet water creek. The women washed and scraped them. Then, these were immersed in water with salt and lemon for a while. Next, they’d be filled with meat, minced onion and blood. These ingredients produce the renowned blood sausages called Chouriças Sanguinhas.
Besides the so-called Chouriças Sanguinhas, we also used to make tasty pork sausage using fine meat cut into pieces and immersed in a bowl with wine and spices for two days.
The pork was left hung for twenty-four hours, so that the meat could cool. Finally, the meat was salted to be kept throughout the year.
After all these chores, the family would finally gather together for a nice lunch. We used to eat Sarrabulho (a typical Portuguese dish, a kind of heavy soup made with bread or rice, blood and pork meat cut in very small pieces). Everybody had a lot of fun sharing in this ritual.
Soon after this communal celebration, people used to start saving money to buy a piglet, so that this ritual could happen again the coming year.

TRADITIONS, CUSTOMS AND FEASTS

Every Alleluia Saturday, at midday, in the Republican Square, Judas* was set on fire to be punished. I used to join the event with my grandfather, who has since passed away. It had been fifty years since the festivity had happened. I remember that scene as if it were yesterday. The Republican Square is ornamented by a separator made of limestone and basalt stones. It is beautifully decorated.
In those days there was Figueiredo´s shop, where stamps and shredded tobacco could be bought. There was also Couto Viana´s bazaar, a toyshop that sold wooden and laminated-plate, toys. Nearby, there was a newsagent’s called Lucia where I used to buy the Primeiro de Janeiro newspaper on Sunday. With the newspaper came a stickers’ supplement from several collections such as the History Portugal, Prince Valiant, and Banco de Portugal (which is now the Costume Museum).
Judas represented a public figure who for several reasons the crowd wanted to put on trial and punish, which was commonplace under the Salazar’s dictatorship. This character was simply symbolic. Judas was put on fire under a fireworks display, which made the show even more spectacular. As kids, we used to go crazy and couldn’t stop clapping our hands.
Nowadays the tradition of burning Judas is still alive. The Monserrate´s parish council still practises this ceremony, but in a different way. The spectre of censorship doesn’t exist anymore. Therefore, in order to make this popular tradition come true, there’s much more freedom and creativity.
The Easter visit is another much appreciated tradition by the Catholics, here in the northern part of Portugal. On Easter Day this event takes place in every parish of the city. The aim of the Easter Visit custom is to take the resurrected Jesus into Christians` homes. The priest takes the cross to people’s homes to be kissed where he is welcomed with food and drinks. On that occasion families have a lavish banquet and invite their close relatives and friends to join them.

The pet of my life

Tutu was a black and white-pawed three-month old she-dog and she became part of my family in 1972. I was living in France then. She grew up with my children and was considered a member of the family. She was a very dear and loyal companion.
Every year, I used to go to Portugal on vacation. A French neighbour of mine used to take care of her. Soon after my departure, Tutu initially refused to eat and would wait for me at the front door. Only a few days later would she behave normally, accepting food and coming in to sleep. On my return, she would be happy and joyful. She would run around me, over and over again.
In 1983, my family and I decided to move back to Portugal. This time, Tutu was to come along with us. I drove a Peugeot J7 on the journey and behaved strangely every time I stopped at the highway rest areas. She began howling the very moment I got out of the car. She was afraid of being left behind, I guess. Therefore, I had to stay in the car with her.
From the moment we arrived, Tutu had to get acquainted with a new language. She couldn’t take orders, because they were given in Portuguese and not in French, but keen as she was, months later she could understand us.
In 1985, Tutu gave birth to a dead puppy, thus becoming mournful and distressed. Fortunately, we had a chick whose mother had died, so Tutu raised it as her own. She used to bring it along with her, grabbing in her mouth. Feeding it was the only thing Tutu couldn’t do at all.
In 1989, Tutu had a serious health problem and she soon passed away. Everybody cried for her. Tutu is still considered the pet of our lives!

Fui levar a menina à porta, sorri-lhe, ela disse-me adeus com as mãos e atirou-me outro beijo sorrindo!

Nobility of the soul

One day I went to Porto, as I was used to, for a medical appointment. I arrived there very early, so I decided to go to a café to have breakfast to kill some time. While I was waiting, a little girl came in. She was very poor, she wore very filthy clothes and looked famished. She approached a table where there was a group of five men chatting and laughing out loud. They were having a first-class breakfast.
The girl was begging them for money. She was starving. The men sitting around that table just ignored her and kept on laughing. She begged for money again. They looked down on her and as she didn’t leave, they asked the waiter to take her out of the café.
I stood up and took her by the hand to the bathroom. I washed her face and hands, combed her hair and asked her the reason she was begging. She told me that all her family had been evicted, because her father suffered from tuberculosis and as he had lost his job, they couldn’t afford to pay the house rent. Therefore, they were living in a slum, under D.Luís Bridge. She had three brothers. I asked her if she wanted money or food. Immediately she replied that she wanted food. I took her to the café table and sat her down by my side. Then I called the waiter and asked him to bring her a glass of milk and some toasts. That was the breakfast I was supposed to have. As I didn’t have any extra money on my pocket, except the amount for my return ticket to Viana, I couldn’t have my breakfast. I didn’t eat anything till 2 o’clock in the afternoon, but in return, my heart was full of joy for having helped that little girl, even if it was only for a single moment.
The girl showed her appreciation with a kiss and thanked me for being her friend.
I still remember that moment. That little girl’s attitude had been the most gratifying thing I have ever experienced.
While I was sitting at that table, an old man came to me and said, ‘I appreciated your noble deed! You have given us a good moral lesson!’ I thanked him and answered, ‘I hope you can make it come true!’ He smiled and went away. He left the café, looking at those other men in despise. I took the girl out of the café, I smiled at her and she said goodbye, waving her hands and sending me a smiling kiss. I’m sure that, if she is still alive, she hasn’t forgotten that moment. Neither will I.
Moments like that have helped me to transform myself into the woman I am today!

Tragic Night at the seaside of Mueda

One day whilst on a fishing expedition out in the Northern Sea in the Galician waters, the narrator’s vessel was hit by a cargo vessel named “Byard” which took the life of a few of the crew members. After a few long hours they were rescued by a homeland fishing boat and taken home. It was a sad moment in his life but life kept on going, so he ended up going back to the sea after mourning his fellow fishermen.
